Panaji: Elections to 11 municipal councils in the state are likely to be postponed, advocate general Devidas Pangam said on Friday. With the latest ordinance, he said the “state election commission will publish a draft notification on ward delimitation and reservation and invite objections from the public, consider these and then only publish a final notification,” Pangam told reporters. This will take time and is likely to push the municipal elections ahead, Pangam said.He said the municipalities act has been amended, with all powers given to the state election commission to carry out ward delimitation and reservation, with a time limit within which objections will be invited and considered before passing the final notification.“Each year there were complaints about reservations and delimitations and about there not being enough time to challenge them in court,” the advocate general said, defending the ordinance. The elections are due in May. State govt has already appointed administrators on some councils whose terms have ended, while the terms of few more are set to end this month.
