Bengaluru: A 56-year-old woman waiting for a bus after work suffered injuries to her ears when a miscreant ripped off her gold earrings and fled from a BMTC bus stop on Hosur Road near Johnson Market Sunday night.Police swung into action and arrested the miscreant, identified as Kanai Adhikari, 40, a native of West Bengal, who had been working as a construction labourer in the city for the last six months.The injured woman has been identified as Ameerbi, a resident of Munegowda Garden in Neelasandra. She works in a convention hall near Johnson Market. Ameerbi told police that the incident occurred while she was waiting for a bus to Neelasandra.An unknown man wearing a mask, who was waiting near the bus stop, approached Ameerbi when she was alone and casually enquired whether a bus to Neelasandra was expected and sat near her. Around 8.10pm, as Ameerbi got up to check whether Route 143 bus was arriving, the miscreant suddenly attacked from behind and tried to pull out her earrings by pushing her onto the road. Despite her screams for help, the accused yanked the earrings with force, one after the other, tearing her earlobes and causing injuries. The miscreant then escaped with both the earrings.The victim tried to run after him but had to give up as she was profusely bleeding. She then went to a nearby masjid and called her daughter-in-law, who immediately informed her husband, Mohammed Yousuf. He rushed to the spot and later accompanied her to Ashok Nagar police station to lodge a complaint.Police took her to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and got her treated. A case was registered under BNS section 309 (Robbery). Ameerbi told police that the earrings weighed 6 grams and were worth over Rs 50,000.Yousuf told TOI, “There is no lighting in the bus shelter or on the stretch. The miscreant took advantage of it to attack my mother.”A senior officer said CCTV footage from the area was verified and clues were gathered about Adhikari. He was arrested within 24 hours of the incident.
