Shillong: Meghalaya, which is going to host the National Games next year, aims to look at sports as an economy in the long run, similar to the concert economy in which the state has emerged successful.Speaking to TOI exclusively, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Our long term goal is to see that we are able to nurture our youths in a better manner, provide them opportunities, sports and in a possibility also look at sports as an economy, look at sports as a source of livelihood and create value out of sporting in our state.”He further added that his govt would like to expand the possibility in football, the sport in which the state has already earned a name, as well as also look at other sports disciplines coming into the state.To realize the long term plan, the CM said the state govt has been putting in numerous efforts in creating overall sports infrastructure in the state.“The finishing touches to some of the stadiums are being done, which we expect by the end of this calendar year. We will be able to complete all our infrastructures required for the National Games as well,” he added.Nearly 240 sports infrastructure projects are either completed or under implementation or under construction in the state.The state has earmarked over Rs 72 crores for National Games preparations. Since June 2025, more than 50,000 athletes have been identified through talent scouting, while over 1,200 are currently undergoing structured training across various sports associations.
