Aadhaar enough to book AMC halls, no wedding card required

Ahmedabad: Residents seeking to book community halls managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will no longer have to submit a wedding invitation card, easing a long-standing hurdle for those planning marriages. The AMC standing committee has directed officials to accept bookings on the basis of an Aadhaar card, even if the wedding invitation was not printed. The decision comes after citizens complained that they were being asked to furnish invitation cards while booking halls two to three months ahead of the wedding.Standing Committee chairman Kamlesh Patel said it had come to the committee’s notice that applicants were being asked to submit Aadhaar cards of the couple and their parents, a demand draft and a wedding invitation card for securing a hall.“People generally print wedding invitation cards only after booking the hall. Asking for the card at the time of reservation creates an unnecessary hurdle,” Patel said.Following the directive, officials have been asked to stop insisting on wedding invitation cards and allow residents to complete the booking process by submitting an Aadhaar card.At present, AMC community halls can be booked up to six months in advance. The civic body is also considering extending the advance booking period to one year, which could provide residents greater flexibility while planning weddings and other functions.
