Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday that he will urge central govt to approach Supreme Court to protect the interests of Goa’s ST community. His remarks came shortly after Bombay high court, in an interim order, restrained the census commissioner from notifying any figures of the estimated ST population for the purpose of ST quota reservation in the state legislative assembly. In a post on X, Sawant said Goa govt has consistently pursued the matter with Centre. “Goa govt is committed to the cause of STs and providing reservation to them in the assembly,” he said.Sawant added that govt was compelled to expedite the process of reserving constituencies for the ST community following strong demands from community leaders, who have insisted that the reservation be implemented for the assembly elections likely to be held in early 2027.
