Mohali: Following a recent resident protest over a dilapidated stretch, the Mohali municipal corporation (MC) on Wednesday commenced the long-awaited reconstruction of the Phase 3–5 road at an estimated cost of ₹3 crore.Confirming the development, mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana stated that the civic body fulfilled its two-day commitment made to residents who had staged a dharna over the poor condition of the road.Along with total road reconstruction, the project includes allied infrastructure works such as the installation and upgrading of street lighting along the stretch.Explaining the prolonged delay, Samana clarified that the construction plant supplying necessary materials had been non-operational, resulting in supply shortages. Operations have now resumed, ensuring sufficient material for ground execution. The mayor further announced that the MC is assessing road conditions across Mohali to prepare repair estimates for several other stretches, alongside ongoing work on sewerage, drainage, and irrigation networks.Meanwhile, Samana dismissed the demonstration as a “political stunt,” alleging that the local councillor and her supporters staged the protest despite knowing the project was already approved and scheduled to start within three days.“It is quite amusing that when they were informed that the repair work would begin within three days, then where was the need to hold a protest?” Samana said.
