Mumbai: A BMC employee was killed, and two others were injured after a speeding car hit two scooters on CD Road in Khar West on Monday. An FIR has been registered against an honorary ex-Army Brigadier who is also a former MP, in the case, police said.Iyappan Harijan (41) was trapped under the car after it struck his two-wheeler. Bystanders lifted the car and pulled him out before he and his wife, Nancy (37), were taken to Bhabha Hospital in an autorickshaw. Harijan died from blood loss at hospital.Nancy, who was riding pillion, suffered bruises on her left hand and other parts of her body. The other scooter rider, Rahul Ghanekar, suffered a fractured hand.Nancy said, “When I looked up, my husband was trapped under the car, and only his leg was visible outside the car. Because of the accident and the busy road, people had gathered there. They lifted the car and pulled my husband out. After a while, he got up and sat down. At that time, my husband had sustained injuries to his head and face and other parts of his body. While my husband and I were being taken to hospital in an auto, he was repeatedly losing consciousness.”Khar police on Tuesday filed an FIR against retired honorary Brigadier Sudhir Sawant (71) under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for causing death by negligence and rash and dangerous driving. Sawant is a former Rajapur MP and remained active in party politics until late 2019.Police said they would act after his discharge from the hospital, where he was undergoing treatment after his blood pressure rose following the accident. Harijan and his wife left their home in Santacruz West at 4.15 pm to shop in Bandra for an event at home when, according to Nancy’s complaint, the car hit their motorcycle from behind.Harijan worked at MTNL for 16 years and joined BMC cleaning services a month ago.
