Mangaluru: Wenlock District Hospital successfully harvested the organs of a 50-year-old brain-dead person on Saturday.Dr Shivaprakash DS, district surgeon and medical superintendent of Wenlock District Hospital, said the family of Prakash Acharya, a resident of Beeri, Kotekar in Ullal taluk, made a selfless decision to donate his organs following his brain death.Dr Shivaprakash said Acharya suffered a severe brain injury after falling in front of his house on Monday. He was admitted to Wenlock District Hospital. Following a comprehensive evaluation and completion of the mandatory brain death protocol by the Brain Death Declaration Committee, he was officially declared brain-dead on Friday.“On Saturday, his family’s courageous decision brought a new ray of hope to several patients. A medical team from KMC Manipal successfully harvested two kidneys, which will benefit two patients currently undergoing dialysis.“Additionally, a team from KMC Attavar retrieved two corneas, offering the gift of sight to two individuals. One life has become an opportunity for many to live better. We pay our deepest respects to this great donor and extend our heartfelt gratitude to his family for their noble decision,” he said.This successful organ donation process was made possible through the dedicated efforts and coordination of multiple medical teams. The primary medical team included Dr Jeko Jacob (physician), Dr Meghana Madhi (intensivist), Dr Sharath Babu (pulmonologist), Dr Abhishek Acharya (neurosurgery), Dr Renita (anesthesiology), alongside postgraduate students Dr Anshul, Dr Avantika Thyagarajan, and Dr Chanukya Chalasani, as well as Dr Shwetha (radiology) and Dr Chaitra (pathology). The process was initiated by Dr Abhishek Acharya and Dr Renita, with coordination from RMO Dr Madhusudan, the MICU nursing team and support staff.The hospital also expressed heartfelt thanks to the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO – Jeevasarthakathe) team for their guidance and coordination.
