Dibrugarh: Tinsukia district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) formed a human chain on NH-37 on Friday, demanding urgent repair and reconstruction of Assam’s dilapidated roads and highways.Led by district general secretary Konseng Gogoi, the protest was part of a statewide programme called by Aasu. Aasu units across Assam formed human chains to highlight deteriorating road conditions and demand govt intervention.In Tinsukia, protesters gathered along NH-37, also known as AT Road, and raised slogans over the condition of the highway and other major roads. They alleged that potholes, damaged surfaces and inadequate maintenance had made several stretches unsafe for motorists and pedestrians.Addressing the media, Gogoi said the roads have become a serious public safety concern and urged the govt to begin repair and reconstruction work without delay.“The condition of the roads and highways cannot be allowed to deteriorate further when people are losing their lives in accidents. The authorities must immediately repair and reconstruct the damaged stretches and ensure safe and smooth transportation,” Gogoi said.Aasu alleged that poor road conditions across Assam had contributed to accidents and commuter hardship. It also questioned the continued collection of toll tax despite the condition of several stretches.The organisation demanded that authorities identify vulnerable stretches, carry out time-bound repairs and ensure proper maintenance.“The govt must stop playing with human lives. People pay tolls and other taxes with the expectation of getting safe and usable roads. The concerned authorities must be held accountable for ensuring the roads remain motorable,” an Aasu protester said.Aasu reiterated its demand for immediate repairs and reconstruction of dilapidated roads, including national highways, across the state.
