Ahmedabad: A professor of NHL Municipal Medical College alleged that an insurance agent diverted three cheques totalling Rs 19 lakh, which were handed over for paying policy premiums, into his personal bank account. The detection of crime branch (DCB) has registered a case and begun investigation.The complaint, filed on Wednesday, stated that the professor was dealing with State Bank of India employees and agents for insurance policies. In March 2025, two persons allegedly approached her at Sharadaben Hospital in Saraspur and suggested that her existing policy be transferred to an SBI Retire Smart Plus policy, promising pension-related benefits.Trusting them, she surrendered an existing policy and purchased six new policies worth Rs 76 lakh. Their premiums were to be paid from proceeds of her earlier policies.According to the complaint, an agent later offered a discount of Rs 2 lakh if she paid premium in advance. On Nov 21, 2025, she gave two signed cheques of Rs 7 lakh and Rs 6 lakh to the agent. She subsequently received a WhatsApp message purportedly containing a premium receipt.However, in Dec 2025, the professor began receiving messages from the insurance company stating that the premium was unpaid. On checking her bank statement, she found that both cheques were deposited into the agent’s personal SBI account, the complaint stated.The agent was later called to the insurance office, where he allegedly issued replacement cheques of Rs 7 lakh and Rs 6 lakh. Both were returned due to insufficient funds in the account.The complaint further stated that a cheque of Rs 6 lakh given earlier to the agent on Sep 16, 2025 for a premium was also deposited into the agent’s personal account.
