Bengaluru: The city’s footpath cleanup drive, ‘Clean Up Bengaluru’, has moved beyond conventional encroachments, with Bescom joining GBA campaign to tackle electrical poles, transformer centres and other infrastructure obstructing pedestrian movement.Bescom has intensified efforts to remove, relocate and secure inactive or hazardous electrical infrastructure occupying or obstructing footpaths across the city. Launched by energy minister KJ George on Aug 1, the initiative gained momentum Saturday, with Bescom personnel undertaking a two-day intensive drive to clear obstructions around transformers and electrical installations on footpath.Bescom MD N Shivashankara personally supervised inspections and cleanup operations in the BMAZ area Saturday. Technical personnel cleared garbage accumulated around transformer centres, raised Gang Operated Switch (GOS) operating rods to seven feet above ground level and expedited the relocation of unwanted electrical infrastructure. The drive will be carried out until the end of this month.The utility has so far surveyed 908 roads across the city. As of Aug 7, Bescom had relocated 356 electric poles, 10 transformer centres and 7 Ring Main Units (RMUs). In addition, officials have cleaned and secured 694 distribution transformer centre (DTC) yards, 107 RMUs and 110 spun poles during the first week of the campaign.
