Dibrugarh: As floods batter Jorhat, crews are racing against surging rivers to seal breached embankments and shield communities from more devastation.Repairs are under way on a war footing, with geotubes, geobags and bamboo palisading deployed across critical sites.Installation of geotubes at the Kakodonga embankment has been completed, taking work to 90%, with only earthwork remaining. At Charaipani, installation of the first geotube is nearing completion, and repairs are 60% complete.Bamboo palisading and B-type geobags are being installed along the Jhanji’s left-bank embankment at Dhantola, though rising water has slowed work.“We are deploying geotubes and bamboo palisading at every critical breach point to stabilise the embankments and prevent further erosion. Despite the sudden rise in water levels that slowed us down briefly, our teams have not stopped work, and we are pushing to complete the repairs at the earliest,” Jorhat DC Jay Shivani said Thursday. At Bhogdoi, a second geotube was installed at the right-bank Solmara breach. Work at Pahumara is continuing, while machinery has been positioned at Majiabheti, Katiramchuk and Kulaichuk.Officials said the Bhogdoi crossed the danger mark within an hour on July 27, hampering the pumping of silt and sand into geotubes and geobags. Receding water since July 29 has allowed repairs to accelerate.More than 1.37 lakh people have been affected in Jorhat. Authorities said embankment restoration remained their priority amid the threat of more rain.A six-member central team led by M Ramachandrudu inspected breaches on July 28 during an Upper Assam flood assessment.
