11 suspected B’deshis held at Silchar station for illegal stay

Silchar: Police arrested 11 people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals, including two women and four children, at Silchar railway station on Monday.Officials said the group travelled from Guwahati to Silchar by train and was intercepted while allegedly attempting to leave the station.During questioning, police learnt that the detainees allegedly entered India illegally several years ago with the help of touts before travelling to Bengaluru, where the adults found work.The group recently left Bengaluru and travelled to Assam via Guwahati, sources said.Investigators suspect they were headed towards an area along the India-Bangladesh border and intended to cross into Bangladesh clandestinely.Police are verifying their identities, nationality and the circumstances of their alleged entry and stay in India. Any documents found in their possession are also being examined.Authorities are trying to trace the network of touts suspected of facilitating their alleged entry into India and subsequent movement across states. Police are also probing whether local facilitators arranged their journey from Silchar towards the international border.The 11 people remain in custody for questioning, and further investigation is under way, officials said.
