Gurgaon: A late-night drive from Delhi to watch the FIFA World Cup final ended in tragedy Monday as two youths were killed and a young woman was injured after their car rammed into a truck that allegedly abruptly changed lanes and hit the brakes on Dwarka Expressway.The victims were identified as Dipank Malik (20), a third-year BSc student at PIET College in Panipat, and Saksham Sachdeva (22), who worked as an event manager. They were residents of Uttam Nagar’s Vani Vihar and Vijay Vihar, respectively. Their friend, Pragati Vashishth (22), also from Vani Vihar, is under treatment but is said to be out of danger. The unidentified truck driver fled the spot in his vehicle.In his complaint lodged at Sector 10A police station, Dipank’s cousin, Mohit Sachdeva, said the trio left Delhi’s Uttam Nagar in Saksham’s i10 around 12.30 am Monday. They headed to a club on Gurgaon’s Sohna Road for a screening of the Argentina-Spain match.Police said the accident took place around 5.20 am near Pareena Towers in Sector 99, when they were on their way back. Mohit told TOI that Saksham was at the wheel, Pragati in the seat next to him and Dipank asleep in the back seat.According to the complaint, the truck, allegedly travelling at high speed, suddenly swerved in front of them and braked. The i10 crashed into its rear.Passersby pulled the three out of the mangled vehicle and rushed them to Venkateshwar Hospital in Sector 18, Dwarka. Dipank and Saksham were declared brought dead, while Pragati was admitted with multiple injuries, including a fractured hand.Police said they got information about the accident from the hospital, following which an ASI from the police outpost in Sector 93, along with other personnel, went to the crash site. A crime scene team also inspected the spot.In his complaint, Mohit said he spoke to witnesses, who told him the truck driver was responsible for the accident. He urged police to identify him and take strict action.After recording Mohit’s statement, police registered an FIR under BNS sections related to rash driving and causing death by negligence, among others. Cops said efforts were under way to identify the offending vehicle and its driver.Saksham and Dipank’s bodies were handed over to their families Tuesday after postmortems.Mohit, who had been invited to go on the ill-fated outing but declined, said he was in shock. “Dipank just wanted to spend a night watching football with his friends. And now two lives have been lost,” he said.Last week, a cab driver was killed and a passenger injured on Dwarka Expressway after the former’s Hyundai Aura rammed into an e-rickshaw carrying iron bars that were jutting out. A TMT rod went through the windshield and pierced the cab driver’s neck. The e-rickshaw driver is yet to be arrested.
