Guwahati: Assam govt is exploring a Bollywood-scale biopic on Ahom commander Lachit Barphukan, with Aditya Dhar in talks.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said during a social media live interaction on Thursday night that preliminary discussions were on with the National Award-winning filmmaker to direct the proposed film.Sarma said the feature film would seek to take the story of Lachit Barphukan, one of Assam’s greatest historical figures, to audiences across India and abroad. Lachit, the 17th-century Ahom general, led Assamese forces to victory over the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.The CM said he was scheduled to meet Dhar in Aug for detailed discussions, but clarified that the project was in early stages and no final decision had been taken.“If Aditya Dhar is unable to take up the project, we will approach other filmmakers. Our objective is to make a world-class film on Lachit Barphukan that truly reflects his extraordinary legacy,” Sarma said.If finalised, it will be the first Bollywood-scale feature film supported by the Assam govt on Lachit Barphukan’s life. Sarma said the proposed biopic would also showcase Assam’s history and cultural heritage before a wider national and international audience.The 2026-27 state Budget, tabled in the Assam assembly on July 10, announced govt support for commercial feature films on two Assam icons — Lachit Barphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.The govt will also back a feature film on Kushal Konwar, the only martyr from Assam to be hanged during India’s freedom struggle, to highlight his life, sacrifice and patriotism.
