4.9 quake jolts Bhutan-Assam border region; no damage reported

Guwahati: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the Bhutan-Assam border region on Saturday afternoon.According to National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 4.01 pm IST, with its epicentre located at latitude 27.163°N and longitude 91.240°E, at a shallow depth of 5 km.Given the shallow depth, tremors were felt across parts of western Assam and neighbouring Bhutan, including Guwahati, though there have been no official reports of injury, casualty or structural damage so far.Disaster management authorities and local administration have not issued any emergency advisories at this stage.Bhutan-Assam border belt falls within a seismically active zone of the eastern Himalayas, which has recorded several low-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes through the year.
