Jaipur: A 70-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death with a wooden stick by her son in Bikaner district during the early hours of Sunday. Police arrested the accused Monday and said they are probing all possible motives, including the family’s claim that he was undergoing treatment for mental illness.The incident took place in Bana village under the Sridungargarh police station area. The victim, Geeta Devi, was sleeping on a cot outside her house when she was allegedly attacked.SHO Kashyap Singh Raghav said the assault is believed to have occurred around 3.30 am. “The accused allegedly attacked his mother with a wooden stick while she was asleep. After the incident, he woke up his wife and told her that his mother was dead before fleeing,” he said.Police said family members had noticed Ram Niwas behaving unusually since late Saturday night. According to them, he was pacing inside the house around 2am while the rest of the family was asleep. Around 4am, he woke up his wife and allegedly told her, ‘Mother has died’. She raised an alarm, prompting other family members to rush outside.The victim’s other son, Om Prakash, told police that they found Geeta Devi lying in a pool of blood on the cot. He alleged that Ram Niwas was trying to move the cot before fleeing after seeing him.A forensic team inspected the crime scene, and the body was sent for post-mortem.Police said the motive is yet to be established. Investigators are verifying the family’s claim that Ram Niwas was undergoing treatment for mental illness.“The accused is being interrogated and all aspects, including his medical history, are being verified. The investigation is on,” a police officer said.
