ONGC says floating jetty collapsed while pontoon height was being raised

Panaji: Days after ONGC’s floating jetty collapsed because of adverse weather, the public sector undertaking’s officials said that the incident happened while the height of the pontoon jetty was being enhanced to further improve its safety.The executive director of ONGC Advanced Training Institute (ATI0) in a statement said that the connecting gangway remained unaffected and is intact. “The impact was confined to a portion of the pontoon that was undergoing enhancement works during a period of severe adverse weather and cyclonic sea conditions,” said ONGC’s statement.The Betul floating jetty is being developed by ONGC as part of its Sagar Setu project to facilitate water-based movement. ONGC officials claimed that the jetty was made temporarily operational during India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 after necessary safety considerations.The floating jetty is located away from the mouth of river Sal, towards the ONGC ATI campus. Officials said an inspection was conducted by the sub-divisional magistrate and a team, and a report has been called for.ONGC said that it has initiated all necessary measures. “The pontoon is being secured, the site has been made safe, and a detailed technical assessment is under way. Corrective engineering measures are being implemented, and the affected portion will be restored in accordance with expert recommendations,” said ONGC.ONGC said that the ongoing works will be completed after incorporating all necessary technical measures, and the project will be fully commissioned only after ensuring compliance with all prescribed safety and operational standards.The Sagar Setu is an 8-m-wide floating jetty with elevators and a staircase, a gangway, and a top waiting lounge for VIPs. It was built to facilitate sea-route transport and was used during India Energy Week to ferry VIPs and delegates from resorts.
