Ahmedabad: Teen crushed under school bus in Naranpura

Ahmedabad: A teenager riding a scooter was killed after coming under the wheels of a school bus taking a wide turn near Shastrinagar Crossroads in Naranpura on Friday afternoon.Police said barricading around an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) cave-in repair site forced the bus to negotiate a wider-than-normal turn before the collision.The deceased worked at a mobile phone repair shop in Naranpura. Police said they could not gather further details from his family as his parents were inconsolable and unable to provide statements.According to traffic police, the bus belonging to Delhi Public School (DPS) was turning left when the scooter approached from behind and hit its rear section. The rider fell beneath the rear wheel and sustained fatal head injuries.Inspector R S Patel of B Division traffic police said preliminary findings indicate the scooter was speeding when it struck the turning bus. “The exact sequence of events is being verified,” he said.Patel said the victim was identified as Yuvraj Songara, 17, a resident of Sheetal Park Society in Saijpur-Bogha. The accused was identified as Divyesh Parmar, 34, Patel said.DPS Bopal school management issued a statement regarding the accident, saying: “We are deeply concerned to learn about the traffic incident involving a two-wheeler rider and a bus carrying our students. Our absolute priority is our students’ well-being, and we want to reassure parents and the community that all children on board are safe and unharmed. They have been sent home in alternative vehicles.”“The vehicle involved is owned and operated by an independent third-party transport service provider, not the school itself. We are actively gathering more information from the service provider and are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate the matter,” the statement said.CCTV footage from the area has been obtained and is being examined as part of the investigation. Witnesses said the impact left a trail of blood on the road as local residents gathered at the scene before police arrived.The bus driver and conductor left the spot after ensuring the children on board were safe, police said. They later approached a local advocate, who informed police that both were willing to cooperate with the investigation. Officers subsequently contacted them. FIR had not been registered till Friday evening.The victim’s body was sent for postmortem after his family members were informed.
