Panchkula: In a major infrastructure upgrade, the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority (PMDA) has begun rehabilitating the city’s 45-year-old storm water drainage network using Machine Wound Spiral Lining (MWSL) technology, a trenchless method that strengthens underground pipelines without extensive excavation. The authority has already initiated drainage rehabilitation works worth nearly Rs 39 crore, while projects valued at over Rs 58 crore are at various stages of tendering and approval.According to PMDA, the city’s stormwater drainage system has exceeded its designed service life and developed structural defects such as cracks and partial blockages, reducing its carrying capacity. Officials said settlement of underground drains has also been observed at several locations, posing risks to nearby public utilities, including high-tension electricity poles and trees. To assess the condition of the network, PMDA had earlier engaged a consultant to conduct a comprehensive survey. Based on the recommendations, a pilot project involving the strengthening of a 900-mm-diameter storm water drain from Geeta Chowk to Town Park was completed at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore using MWSL technology.Encouraged by the results, the authority has expanded the programme across the city. The largest project, estimated at Rs 38.87 crore, involves rehabilitation of 1,350mm, 1,800mm and 2,400mm diameter storm water drains from Town Park to Singh Nallah Choe. The work was allotted last month and is currently under way.Another project worth Rs 33.51 crore covers rehabilitation of 1,800mm, 2,100mm and 2,400mm diameter drains from Bhagwan Parshuram Chowk to Singh Nallah Choe in Industrial Area Phase I. The tender has already been floated.A third project, estimated at Rs 25.02 crore, proposes strengthening storm water drains along the Sector 20/21 dividing road and from Bell Factory T-Point in Sector 15 to Bhagwan Parshuram Chowk. The estimate has been prepared and is awaiting approval.PMDA officials said the remaining citywide rehabilitation works will be taken up after the consultant submits its final report. Estimates for the balance works are expected to be prepared by Aug 2026.Officials said the use of trenchless technology would minimise traffic disruption, extend the lifespan of the drainage network and improve its performance ahead of future monsoon seasons.
