8 years after 2018 murder, man shot dead in Nuh; cops suspect revenge killing

Gurgaon: Security had been stepped up in a Nuh village to prevent any escalation of tension following a killing. On Monday, a group of 10-12 armed men arrived on two motorcycles and a vehicle and opened fire at a 28-year-old man in Leherwadi village falling under Punhana.Azruddin’s killing is being seen as a fallout of a murder eight years ago. In 2018, Azruddin was named as the main accused in the murder of a man, Wasim, in which a case was registered against 13 named accused and others. Monday’s killing has brought back memories of the incident that took place in the village eight years ago. After the family lodged a complaint, police registered a murder case at Sadar Punhana police station on Tuesday. Police are examining whether Monday’s killing was carried out as an act of revenge for Wasim’s murder.According to sources, one of the suspected attackers — in the Monday incident — was a minor when Wasim was killed and had allegedly harboured a grudge over the murder of his brother.A Facebook post attributed to the suspect after Monday’s killing — in which he allegedly claimed that his brother’s murder had been avenged — is also being examined as part of the investigation.A senior police officer said, “Azruddin had spent three years in jail and both the families had settled the matter in the panchayat. However, the legal statements were not taken back and the court case has been continuing. We have formed teams to nab the accused.”Singha denied that there was any ongoing dispute between the two sides. “We want justice,” the sarpanch said, adding that the attackers should be arrested at the earliest.Monday’s incident took place around 7pm in the presence of four-five children from Azruddin’s family who were playing nearby, according to village sarpanch Singha. “The attackers also assaulted the children with sticks, following which they ran away to safety,” Singha said. The earlier dispute between the two sides was also linked to a clash during an election rally in Palwal and a dispute over adjoining land, according to people familiar with the matter.SHO Sadar Punhana denied the links, though. “We are yet to receive any such information regarding the case.”
