Pune: Cybercrooks posing as police and CBI officers allegedly duped a 59-year-old resident of Nigdi of Rs12 lakh.The fraud took place between Aug 11 and 21 this year. The victim, who works for a private company, filed an online complaint. Nigdi police registered a case on Friday.An officer from Nigdi police said, “On Aug 11, the complainant received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be a crime branch officer and accused him of having harassed at least 24 women by sending them lewd messages and illegal advertisements. The caller claimed they had registered a case against him and he could be arrested.”The caller thereafter connected the complainant with a person posing as a CBI officer. The latter told the complainant his bank account had been used for money laundering.“He took details of the complainant’s bank balance, fixed deposits and gold jewellery. He then told the complainant to break his fixed deposits and transfer the amount to a given bank account. The ‘CBI officer’ assured him of returning the money once the verification of the bank account was done. Believing him, the complainant transferred Rs11.9 lakh to the account,” the officer said.When the cellphone number became untraceable and he did not receive the money, he realised he had been duped. “We have sought the details of the bank account from the complainant’s bank,” the officer said.
