Silchar: A 57-year-old man was arrested in Sribhumi district for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a Class 10 student.The incident occurred on Saturday as the girl was returning home after attending an Independence Day programme at her higher secondary school, police said.According to her family’s complaint, the accused intercepted her, covered her mouth and forcibly took her to his house. He allegedly locked her in a room and attempted to sexually assault her.The girl resisted, bit the accused’s hand and escaped through a window.Police arrested the man following the complaint and launched an investigation. He was being questioned at the police station, sources said.The family alleged that several women previously complained against the accused. Residents claimed that he frequently consumed alcohol and was involved in illicit liquor sales. Police have yet to verify these allegations.Further investigation is underway.
