Sonipat: Amid enforcement of the model code of conduct for the civic bodies and panchayat elections, Sonipat police seized large consignments of illicit liquor in separate operations.The Sonipat Anti-Gangster Unit (SUAG) intercepted a truck on the NH-44 service lane near Pipli Kheda. During inspection, police found a huge quantity of illicit liquor concealed beneath sacks of rice. During preliminary questioning, the driver said the consignment was bound for Siliguri in West Bengal, but failed to produce any licence or permit.The excise dept was informed, and a joint inspection led by excise inspector Sandeep Malik resulted in the recovery of 11,328 bottles — 944 cartons — of illicit liquor of various brands. The truck was impounded and further legal proceedings initiated.In another operation, police teams manning an interstate checkpoint in the Kharkhoda area intercepted two canters during routine checks. Searches led to the recovery of 750 and 600 cartons of English liquor, respectively. Preliminary enquiries suggest the stock was being transported from Punjab to Delhi, but the vehicles had deviated from the approved route, triggering suspicion.Both vehicles were seized and the recovered liquor handed over to the excise department for further action.Police spokesperson Ravinder Singh said intensified checking would continue throughout the election period, with special focus on preventing the illegal movement and distribution of liquor. Surveillance has been stepped up at sensitive locations to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
