New Delhi: Delhi govt is planning to redevelop a 3.3-km stretch of Netaji Subhash Marg — from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate — into an organised and attractive corridor, with footpaths, pedestrian plazas, cycle tracks, upgraded bus lanes and stops, lanes for other vehicles, parking spaces and landscaped green areas. The project, being undertaken by Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN), aims to connect historic monuments, parks and public spaces along the stretch while improving traffic management and facilities for commuters. The redevelopment plan divides the road into three sections — Kashmere Gate to GPO Chowk, GPO Chowk to Brij Mohan Chowk, and Brij Mohan Chowk to Delhi Gate. The road width varies across these stretches: from 12 metres to 45 metres. Public toilets will be constructed on both sides of the road, while existing bus stops will be upgraded in line with PWD’s streetscape design guidelines.Chief minister Rekha Gupta said the project aims to improve urban amenities while preserving the historic identity of Old Delhi.A major component of the project is the integrated development of 12 prominent locations and green spaces along the corridor. They include Agrasen Park, Lothian Cemetery, Old Railway Station Chowk, Red Fort Green Pocket, Subhash Park, Hindi Park, Sunehri Masjid Bagh, Delhi Gate Chowk, Ekta Sthal and Brij Mohan Chowk.A Heritage Interpretation Park is also proposed near Delhi Gate. It will have a statue, pavilion, green spaces, pedestrian access and parking facilities. Its beautification plan includes planting trees and plants along both sides of the road, flower beds, green medians, streetlights, decorative walls and seating spaces. Pedestrian crossings, traffic signals and organised junctions are also proposed to ensure safer movement.
