Ahmedabad: Gujarat ranks among the top three states in agri-commodities trading on National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) by both volume and value, according to a senior exchange official. Officials said trading activity has been expanding at nearly 100% CAGR over the past three years, with Gujarat-based Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) contributing significantly to overall participation.Kedar Deshpande, chief business officer, NCDEX, said Gujarat accounts for a major share of client turnover on the platform. “In 2025-26, Gujarat contributed about 26% of the turnover generated by traded clients,” he said. “Nationally, there are around 1.10 lakh active clients, and Gujarat ranks among the top three states along with Rajasthan and Maharashtra.”Deshpande added that the exchange’s overall turnover has risen sharply in recent years. “NCDEX turnover has grown at around 100% CAGR over the past three years. For 2026-27, we expect turnover to reach about Rs 2.8 lakh crore,” he said.Deshpande highlighted the role of FPO participation in deepening market access for farmers. “We enabled FPOs to trade on the exchange in 2020. At present, 825 FPOs are trading on NCDEX, and 98 of them are from Gujarat,” he said.NCDEX Ltd, through its Investor Protection Fund Trust, began hosting a two-day Investor Awareness Workshop in Ahmedabad on Oct 6, as part of the International Organization of Securities Commissions World Investor Week 2026.Deshpande said agri-commodity trading differs from equities and precious metals due to contract expiry and settlement mechanics. “Promises of assured returns, ‘hot tips’ and rumours, especially those spread through social media and messaging apps, are classic red flags of fraud,” he said.
