New Delhi: Delhi Police said Tuesday that a 24-year-old man, arrested a day ago, was circulating an AI-generated video targeting a police officer.The man, Nadeem Ahmed Ameen, runs a social media account that he created in April. It has around 24,000 subscribers. Police are probing his activities and possible sources of funding as part of their investigation into “a possible larger conspiracy to create unrest”. Police said Nadeem was operating the account from Haryana.TOI reported the arrest on Oct 5.Police said that on Oct 4, while monitoring social media feeds, certain Instagram and Facebook reels came to their notice in which a manipulated video was allegedly being projected as genuine CCTV footage. The video showed a person dressed as a police officer allegedly engaging in sexually inappropriate conduct with a woman. The photograph, name and designation of an ACP were prominently displayed alongside the video, allegedly creating an impression that the officer was involved in the incident.Police the registered a case under sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 353(1)(c) (statements conducing to public mischief), 336 (forgery), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine), and 294 (sale, etc., of obscene books, etc.) of BNS at the cyber police station in New Delhi.Nadeem, from Palwal in Haryana, was caught in Mewat on Oct 5. His phone was also seized.Police said that Nadeem told investigators he started his channel during the CJP protest in June-July. He created the video, for which he is being investigated, using different AI tools on Oct 3 and uploaded it the next day.Additional DCP (New Delhi) Manjeet said the reel was one of the reasons why protesters got even more agitated on Oct 4.Police claimed that the suspect told them “he intended to create an atmosphere of anarchy and unrest”.Halt on officer’s promotionA Delhi Police ACP, who is facing a sexual harassment investigation by the crime branch after a Jantar Mantar protester raised the charge, has requested the commissioner of police to keep his promotion order on hold.Delhi govt clarified that the promotion was not a recent decision. The proposal was sent in Aug, and the promotion was withheld following the officer’s request.“However, considering the inquiry pending against me in the crime branch, Delhi Police, regarding allegations against me by a YouTuber, I hereby give my consent to keep this order concerning only me on hold,” the letter said.Around 11.59 pm on Monday, Delhi govt posted on X that the Oct 5 order, assigning duty charge of the post of additional deputy commissioner of police to 12 DANIPS officers, was being modified with respect to one ACP.
