Gurgaon: Police have set up two task forces to crack down on stunt driving and speeding, and penalise those found violating road safety rules.The task forces will function under the supervision of the deputy commissioner of police (traffic) and will focus on cases involving reckless driving, speeding, road rage, wrong-side driving, stunt riding, modified vehicles creating public nuisance and other life-threatening traffic violations.The move comes after Gurgaon recorded 1,118 road crashes in 2025 — a 9% increase over the previous year. Police have found that motorists performing dangerous stunts for social media are responsible for many of the crashes. These stunts not only endanger those who are performing them but also other motorists and pedestrians.On Wednesday, police arrested three men for filming a stunt on MG Road after a video of the incident was shared widely on social media.The accused, Aniket (24), Akash (26), and Ved Prakash (19), are all residents of Khatikaan Bas Mohalla in Mahendragarh district.In the video, a young man was seen sitting on the bonnet of a moving Bolero car while another youth drove the vehicle rashly on the busy MG Road. Several other vehicles and pedestrians were also seen in the video around the Bolero, raising concern about public safety.Taking cognisance of the video, police registered an FIR at the DLF Sector 29 police station and launched an investigation.In another case, police registered an FIR after a video showing a man sitting on the roof of a moving car on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway in the city went viral on social media.“Apart from field enforcement, the task forces will continuously monitor videos and posts circulating on social media to identify violators. Once identified, offenders will be traced and stringent legal action will be initiated against them under the relevant provisions of law,” police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said.Senior officers said the deputy commissioner of police (traffic) will regularly review the functioning of both task forces and the enforcement measures taken by them.In a statement, police appealed to residents to follow traffic rules and refrain from stunt driving, rash driving, road rage or any dangerous activity on public roads for online popularity.
