Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested an ATM security guard, Sachchidananda Mondal, for allegedly helping steal Rs 10.57 lakh from a businessman at an ATM kiosk in Bhawanipore.Police said Mondal knew the businessman often came to the ATM with large amounts of cash in a particular bag. He allegedly planned a bag-swap theft with help from a local man and his girlfriend.On Monday, the businessman came to the ATM with the cash. Mondal’s girlfriend allegedly brought an identical empty bag. The accomplices told the businessman the ATM had a technical issue and asked him to wait outside. While he was outside, Mondal allegedly switched the cash bag with the empty one.CCTV footage later showed Mondal leaving with the businessman’s bag. Police arrested him from Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas.Police recovered Rs 6 lakh from the account of one person to whom Mondal owed money. They are trying to recover the remaining amount and arrest the woman involved. Police have also asked the security agency for documents showing whether Mondal’s background was properly checked.
