Kolkata: Two 18-year-old college students were allegedly pushed into the Hooghly by two ‘friends’ following an argument at Nawabganj Ghat in Ichhapur, North 24-Parganas, on Tuesday afternoon.Police have detained the two accused, Ashutosh Saha, a resident of Hindmotor, and Kushal Shaw, a resident of Bhatpara.Locals said four BCom second-year students—three boys and a girl, were sitting at Nawabganj Ghat when an argument broke out among them. “The altercation soon turned physical, during which two of the boys pushed one of their friends, Abhishek Mondal, into the river. They then pushed the young woman, Aindrila Karmakar, into the river as well,” said a trader.People present at the ghat raised an alarm and attempted to rescue the victims but were unsuccessful. Police were informed immediately and the divers were deployed.“Despite search operations, the two students remained untraceable till Tuesday evening,” a senior police officer said.
