Work on 3rd phase of Marina revamp set to finish by month-end

Chennai: Work on the third phase of Blue Flag stretch on the Marina Beach is set to be completed by this month-end, with civic authorities choosing open public spaces over commercial-style attractions. Officials said the focus of the revamp is to create a cleaner and more people-friendly beachfront where visitors can walk, relax, play and spend time with their families without overcrowding or visual clutter. This work, being carried out at an estimated cost of 6crore, is coming up behind Anna Memorial and spread across 20acres. The project includes improved seating areas, pedestrian-friendly pathways, landscaping and better public amenities. The work commenced in early 2026.“We have almost completed the redevelopment work of the third phase, and it is expected to be completed by the end of this month. Also, in the first and second phases, we installed reclining chairs, bamboo seating, meditation and reading corners. However, the public requested that some space be kept open for relaxation and play areas. So, we have limited the installation of other facilities in the third phase,” said GCC executive engineer Muthaiah.Officials said the redesigned stretch will include wider open sand zones for children and families, shaded seating spaces, improved lighting and additional dustbins to reduce littering. GCC is also planning to strengthen maintenance activities, including regular cleaning and monitoring, to prevent encroachments and damage to public facilities. Civic officials added that the revamp aims to balance tourism, recreation and public accessibility while preserving Marina’s identity as one of the city’s most iconic public spaces.Frequent visitors to the beach welcomed the move.”People come here to enjoy the sea breeze and spend time freely. Open space is more important than decorative structures everywhere,” said V Jagadeesan, a resident of Santhome.
