Varanasi: Rohaniya police on Monday arrested a woman, who allegedly conspired to usurp property worth crores of rupees by posing her as the widow of an unmarried man.Rohaniya police station in-charge Inspector Raju Singh identified the accused as Sarita Devi (44), a resident of Parsipur Baraila in Bhadohi district. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest her five alleged accomplices — Prakhar Singh, Vishal Singh, Shivam Kumar Singh, Rajesh Kumar Singh of Todarpur in the Rajatalab area, and Sanjana Devi of Bhadohi.The accused came under the police scanner after Ram Bilas Yadav, a resident of Jakkhini, lodged a complaint at Rohaniya police station on March 16. In his complaint, Yadav stated that his brother, Babulal, was unmarried and had died on Oct 25, 2019. Following his death, Sarita, allegedly in collusion with an organised gang, hatched a conspiracy to fraudulently claim ownership of Babulal’s land by posing as his widow.During the investigation, police uncovered the modus operandi of Sarita’s gang. According to officials, the gang procured a forged death certificate of Babulal from the concerned municipal body and managed to replace the name of Sarita’s husband with Babulal’s name on her Aadhaar card. Sarita also allegedly got her own name, along with that of her daughter Sanjana, entered in the family (Kutumb) register to project herself as Babulal’s legal heir.Police said a detailed scrutiny of the documents revealed that Sarita and her associates had forged all the papers. Using these fabricated documents, she also executed a fraudulent land sale agreement. Following the findings, police arrested Sarita and sent her to jail.
