Noida: A 44-year-old was cheated out of over Rs 9 lakh by a fraudster she met on a matrimonial website. The accused posed as an American resident who was in need of financial support due to a medical condition in order to siphon funds from the woman.In her complaint, the Sector 36 resident told cops she had posted an advertisement on a matrimonial website in April this year. She received a few proposals and quickly ended up in contact with the accused. The two of them communicated via WhatsApp from April 1 to June 22. They had also spoken on the phone.The accused posed as a doctor who owned a 3BHK flat in Dallas, a city in the USA. He had allegedly offered to marry her and provide her son with the opportunity of studying in the USA once the woman’s divorce had finalised. He later told her he had a medical condition and needed money for continued treatment.“I helped him by selling my gold jewellery as I didn’t have any cash with me. But then he asked for another Rs 3 lakh, which I don’t have with me, so I came to the police station,” she said.In total, the woman sent the accused Rs 9.3 lakh. In her complaint, the woman asked police to verify the man’s identity and asked for her money to be returned if he was found to be a fraud. “If he is genuine, then I would like to meet him and will continue with the marriage. But if he has a criminal background, then I want recovery,” the FIR states.An FIR has been registered against an unknown person under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the BNS and the IT Act. “Teams have been formed to investigate the case,” said cybercrime branch SHO Vijay Rana.
