Ahmedabad: A 26-year-old woman approached police alleging that a man concealed his first marriage and two children from her and married her and subsequently assaulted and confined her at their rented house in Vadaj.According to the complaint filed on Saturday, the woman had known the accused for around one-and-a-half years when they lived as neighbours in Ghatalodia. The two allegedly developed a relationship and began speaking on the phone. In Feb this year, the accused allegedly promised to marry her and established a physical relationship with her.The woman said that on March 29, the accused took her to a marriage venue near the old High Court in Navrangpura, where they married according to Hindu rituals in the presence of two witnesses brought by him. They shifted to a rented flat in Vadaj and began living as husband and wife. She said she quit her job after the marriage.About 10 days later, the woman allegedly learnt from the accused’s maternal aunt that he had already been married and had a son and daughter. She confronted him. But he allegedly dismissed the disclosure and claimed that his aunt was trying to create problems in their marriage.The complainant alleged that the accused abused and assaulted her after consuming alcohol. She also alleged that he would lock her inside the house, prevent her from leaving and threaten to kill her if she tried to escape. She further alleged that he repeatedly forced her into physical relations against her will.On June 22, when the accused left for Rajkot for work, the woman allegedly left the house at night and returned to her parental home. She later stayed with her paternal aunt for around two months before returning to her family.She alleged that the accused sent relatives and acquaintances to persuade her to return, promising that he would divorce his first wife.Police began investigating the allegations of cheating, assault, confinement and forced physical relations. The complainant has submitted a copy of her marriage certificate, while police said statements of family members and other witnesses would be recorded as part of the probe.
