SEASON’S SPECTACLE: The Dima Hasao forest department has stepped up measures to protect the Amur falcons

Silchar: Amur falcons have begun arriving in Umrangso, renewing interest in birdwatching, conservation and wildlife tourism in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The migratory birds arrive annually once winter sets in, travelling from breeding grounds in East Asia to southern Africa. They are expected to remain in the region until Dec before continuing their journey. The Dima Hasao forest department has stepped up measures to protect the birds during their seasonal stay.Amur falcons breed in parts of eastern Asia, including northern China and southeastern Russia, before travelling through northeastern India and crossing the Arabian Sea to reach their wintering grounds in southern Africa. During their stopover, they feed on insects and build up energy reserves for the onward journey.Their annual congregation has made Umrangso increasingly popular with birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and tourists. The arrival has also created opportunities to promote ecotourism in Dima Hasao. The Amur Falcon Festival, organised in Umrangso, has drawn attention to the district’s biodiversity and tourism potential. It also showcases the region’s natural beauty, wildlife and local culture, while encouraging community participation in conservation.Tourism stakeholders believe growing interest in the falcons could benefit homestays, hotels, transport operators and other tourism-related businesses.Conservation, however, remains a concern. The birds require undisturbed habitats and adequate feeding grounds during their brief stay. Wildlife experts have stressed the need to prevent hunting, disturbance and habitat damage, and to promote responsible tourism.Conservationists say sustained protection, community participation and regulated tourism could help establish Umrangso as a major birdwatching destination in the northeast.
