MUMBAI: Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division is implementing various cleanliness, waste management and civic awareness initiatives under the “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026” campaign, a senior official said on Sunday. More than 10 tonnes of waste were collected during the campaign, which ran from September 21 to 24 with active participation from railway employees, officers and passengers.As part of a special cleanliness drive at the Surat Coach Care Centre, 200kg of waste was cleared and handed over to municipal authorities. Plans are also underway to develop a garden at the site. Comprehensive cleaning of train interiors, toilets and exterior surfaces was carried out at the Mumbai Central and Virar car sheds.To promote public participation, door-to-door outreach was conducted across 158 households, while 140 people were educated about home composting and waste management. The 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle was promoted by creating utility and art items from railway scrap. More than 150 railway employees also took the cleanliness pledge.Additionally, health check-up camps were organised for sanitation workers under the Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir initiative at Virar and Dadar. Through shramdaan (voluntary labour) and awareness drives at various stations, including Surat, Umargam, Bhayandar and Gholvad, the Mumbai Central Division has reinforced its commitment to maintaining clean and green railway premises.
