KOLKATA: Kashmira Sheikh, 36, visited the Kultali Jamtala branch of PNB in Bengal’s South 24 Parganas to check whether the subsidy for her LPG cylinder had come through. She froze at the sound of what the bank official said was the latest “credit” to her account — Rs 99,99,99,997.She lives in an asbestos-roofed house and does zari embroidery to supplement her husband’s income from sewing bags, now has to deal with the additional shock of her lone bank account being frozen pending an inquiry into the mysterious deposit, Rs 3 short of Rs 100 crore.Turns out she isn’t the only one to have money they can’t use credited to their accounts, unofficially attributed to a suspected server malfunction affecting banking transactions across Bengal.Nupur Gupta, who owns a cloud kitchen in Kolkata’s Beleghata, was dragged into a joint police, bank and income tax department investigation after an unexplained deposit of Rs 47 crore in her account. She reported the transaction last Friday.PNB officials said that the “issue” was under review but the bank is yet to make any official statement.
