Behrampore: Sagardighi MLA Bayron Biswas sustained burn injuries in a fire at his Dhulian home under Samserganj police station on Saturday morning. Biswas was admitted in a private nursing home at Dakbungalow owned by his family.CM Suvendu Adhikari said the incident would be investigated and wished Biswas a speedy recovery.The incident took place between 11-11.15 am. Locals said they saw thick black smoke billowing from the second floor of the house and alerted others. Biswas was rescued by his family members.Two fire engines and police reached the spot and brought the blaze under control within an hour. The cause of the fire has not been established. Fire officials and police have begun an inquiry to determine whether it was caused by a short circuit or by a burning bidi.Police sources said Biswas was stable. A senior doctor at the nursing home said the MLA had suffered burn injuries on his hands and legs, covering around 30% of his body. Family members indicated that he may be shifted to Kolkata if his condition did not improve. The nursing home has not issued an official medical bulletin.Biswas’s wife, Suriya, who is also a director of the family-run healthcare unit, is overseeing his treatment. Family members declined to speak to the media.Biswas, a prominent bidi businessman from Murshidabad, first drew political attention after winning the Sagardighi bypoll in March 2023. He later joined Trinamool and won the 2026 assembly election from Sagardighi on a Trinamool ticket. Three months later, he aligned with the Ritabrata Banerjee-led Trinamool bloc.Veteran Congress neta Adhir Chowdhury said he was shocked by the news. “I have always had affection for Bayron because of his simplicity. We had given him the ticket, and his victory in the Sagardighi bypoll had motivated Congress workers. I was hurt when he left the party and joined Trinamool. I will meet him and pray for his early recovery,” Chowdhury said.Banerjee said: “I am deeply disturbed and pained by the news about my friend and colleague Bayron Biswas. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
