Dibrugarh: State water resources minister Sushanta Borgohain on Thursday visited Majuli, the world’s largest river island, to assess floods and erosion threatening the culturally significant landmass.Borgohain, also Majuli district’s guardian minister, was accompanied by Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam and district commissioner Shrishti Singh. The minister surveyed flood and erosion-hit Kordoiguri, where the Brahmaputra has been steadily eating into Majuli’s southern banks. The river forms the island’s southern and southeastern boundary, and monsoon currents have left stretches of the riverbank unstable, with sections collapsing and endangering homes, farmland and livelihoods. The team then visited Molaya Chapori and Kuli Chapori, where the Subansiri has triggered severe erosion along the island’s northern edge. The Subansiri, along with Kherkutia Xuti — an anabranch of the Brahmaputra — marks Majuli’s northern and northwestern boundary. Swollen by heavy upstream rain, the Subansiri has intensified pressure on fragile banks, compounding the threat to an island that has lost large areas to erosion over decades.Borgohain directed the water resources department to take preventive steps and said solutions would follow quickly.“We will deploy all available resources from the water resources department to stop further erosion and protect lives and property. I have directed officials to act immediately and submit a short-term and long-term plan,” Borgohain said.DC Singh briefed the minister on ground conditions and measures taken by the district administration to assist flood-affected residents and limit erosion damage.Majuli, a Unesco tentative-list heritage site and home to Vaishnavite satras, has long faced recurring floods and erosion. With the monsoon continuing, residents said they hoped the visit would lead to swift action.
