Silchar: A Bengal slow loris that strayed into a residential area in Kalain of Cachar district was rescued by forest personnel and released into a reserve forest. A local youth was injured after the animal bit him during an attempted rescue.Residents spotted the nocturnal primate on the boundary wall of Sudip Nath’s house on College Road on Tuesday night. As word spread, curious residents gathered outside the house to catch a glimpse of the animal, which is rarely seen in residential areas.Local youth Pradip Baishnab tried to secure the loris in a sack to prevent it from escaping or being harmed. The frightened animal bit him on the hand. Baishnab later managed to secure it with the help of another resident, Pintu Das.Temporary forest worker Kajal Das arrived at the spot and alerted Kalain forest beat. Forest personnel subsequently took the animal into their care and, after examining its condition, released it into a nearby reserve forest.Kalain forest beat officer Mintu Baruah said slow lorises seldom venture into residential areas. Officials suspect the animal had strayed from a nearby forest.Forest personnel took Baishnab to Kalain Model Hospital for treatment, after which doctors referred him to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
