Voluntarily withdrew my application to enter Canada: Romana

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana on Saturday claimed that he voluntarily withdrew his application to enter Canada after being asked to give an undertaking that he would not indulge in any political activity in the country.Romana was stopped for questioning by the Canadian immigration authorities on his arrival in Vancouver.Romana alleged that a “manufactured” complaint was submitted to Canadian immigration authorities from Manila to stop his entry, even though he had secured the required court permission. He said, “The complainant was privy to all political cases registered against me, a few of which even I had forgotten.”Romana said the complainant tried to make out a case that he was a threat to public safety.Addressing a press conference here, the Akali Dal leader said he informed the immigration authorities that he wanted to meet his daughter, attend a marriage function and interact with NRIs in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab.“When I was informed that I would have to give an undertaking that I would not indulge in any political activity, I chose to return to India,” said Romana. He also placed before the media the papers proving that he left Canada voluntarily.Romana alleged that all this was done because the Aam Aadmi Party was rattled by the response the SAD was receiving from the Non-Resident Indian community in Canada. “The AAP govt had also tried its best to unsettle the SAD team’s visit by provoking the NRI community to ask us tough questions,” he added.Romana further alleged that the “AAP propaganda machinery” went all out to defame him by spreading the rumour that he got down at Vancouver in an inebriated condition.MSID:: 131704939 413 |
