Varanasi: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has intensified its crackdown on the illegal sale of meat and fish during the holy month of Shrawan, imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 on violators and seizing 2.45 kg of meat during surprise inspections across the city. Officials warned that repeat offenders would face immediate sealing of their shops.Despite a complete ban on the sale of meat, fish and chicken within the municipal limits during Shrawan, complaints were received about illegal sales by some vendors. Taking a strict stance, the municipal administration launched an enforcement drive against such activities.On Wednesday, following the directions of municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, teams from the animal husbandry department and enforcement wing conducted surprise inspections in key and sensitive areas, including Rewari Talab, the fish market at Shivala, Chaukaghat, Nadesar, Andhara Pul, Pitarkunda and Lallapura.During the drive, fines were collected from shopkeepers found selling meat and fish in violation of the ban. The team also seized 2.45 kg of meat from the spot.Officials warned vendors that if they are found selling meat or fish again during Shrawan, their shops will be sealed with immediate effect. Animal Veterinary and Welfare Officer Dr Vijay Amritraj said surprise inspections will continue in different wards and major markets across the city in the coming days.
