US-bound traveller leaves behind bag with ₹10.14L in foreign currencies & meds, Guwahati airport returns it safely

Guwahati: Airport authorities at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) recovered and returned an unattended bag containing foreign currency worth over Rs 10.14 lakh.The bag was detected during routine security screening at Terminal 1 on June 26, 2026, at the automated tray retrieval system (ATRS). CISF personnel secured it and handed it to the airport’s lost & found team. The passenger, Dipak Ravjibhai Patel, was identified from the name on the bag and the medicine strips found inside.The bag contained 175 Chinese yuan, USD 10,720, medicines and personal belongings. Officials said the US currency was valued at about Rs 10.13 lakh and the Chinese yuan at around Rs 2,500.After reviewing CCTV footage, the lost & found team confirmed Patel had already boarded a flight to Hyderabad.“In coordination with CISF and Hyderabad airport authorities, the passenger was traced, ownership verified, and the bag returned to an authorised representative named by the passenger,” an LGBIA spokesperson said.Officials said the bag was handed over to Patel’s authorised representative on Monday, while the incident was confirmed on Tuesday. Sources said Patel, originally from Gujarat and currently based in the US, had visited the northeast with his family and was returning to the United States on Tuesday after a trip to China.“He somehow left the bag, which was found by CISF,” the official added.
