Jaipur: The sixth session of Rajasthan Assembly under the Bhajan Lal Sharma govt begins Thursday with the Congress set to raise the condition of govt schools as one of its key issues, both inside and outside the House. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP is expected to push the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill and amendments to the State Universities Act. The session is likely to be politically charged, with the duration of the House emerging as the first major flashpoint. The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) will meet at 2pm Thursday to decide the number of sittings. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said Congress will oppose any attempt to restrict the session to fewer than 10 working days. “The Assembly is meeting after six months and there are several important issues pending before the govt. If the govt is serious about democracy, it should give the House enough time to discuss these issues,” he said. Congress leaders have listed the condition of govt schools, falling enrolment, poor infrastructure, deaths of pregnant women, rising crime and other public issues for discussion. The party is also expected to press the govt for detailed replies on pending matters. Govt sources said BJP is considering a session of two to four days, after which the House could be adjourned sine die. The govt may subsequently reconvene the session after Nov 15, allowing MLAs to focus on preparations for the upcoming local body elections. The duration issue was also discussed at Tuesday’s all-party meeting. Jully sought an 8-10-day sitting, while govt chief whip Jogeshwar Garg cited the upcoming local body elections and the need for MLAs to work in their constituencies.
