Two youths drown in Narmada after midnight swim challenge; one still missing

Ahmedabad: A late-night outing after a dinner party turned tragic when three young men were swept away in the Narmada canal near Adalaj after five friends jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue one another. While two of them managed to swim to safety with the help of locals, two bodies were recovered on Saturday and the search for the third youth continued till late Sunday evening.According to Adalaj police, around ten friends from Adalaj and Gota had gathered at a farm on Friday night for a dinner party. After the gathering ended, five of them headed to the Adalaj-Zundal stretch of the Narmada canal between 1.30am and 2am.Police said the group began arguing over who was the better swimmer. During the exchange, one of the youths jumped into the canal to prove his swimming skills. As he struggled against the strong current, another friend jumped in to rescue him. Seeing both in distress, the remaining three also leapt into the canal in a desperate bid to save them.Harsh Prajapati, 21, of Adalaj, Kaushik Thakor, 20, of Adalaj, and Arpit Patel, 20, of Gota were swept away.Harsh’s body was recovered from the Jamiyatpura canal, while Kaushik’s body was found near Khoraj. The search for Arpit continued on Sunday.Adalaj police inspector S G Desai said further investigation is underway.
