Varanasi: Azamgarh police arrested two miscreants for stealing gold jewellery from women on the pretext of cleaning it in Kanjahit village.During an encounter, one of the criminals was shot in the leg and was arrested while the other was arrested after a brief chase.The police seized looted gold chain, earrings, illegal country-made pistol and cartridges from their possession.On June 16, Jaynarayan Dubey of Kanjahit village gave a written complaint stating that two unknown persons took gold ornaments from his wife Manorama Dubey in the name of cleaning them and fled. On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered.On the intervening night of June 20 and 21, SI Rajesh Kumar Singh, in-charge of Palhana outpost, was conducting a checking drive at Gayatri turn when two suspicious motorbike-borne persons were seen coming from Mehnajpur. On seeing the police they tried to escape towards Lahuwan.On the information, Inspector-in-charge Vimal Prakash Rai and Outpost in-charge Lalganj SI Ravindranath Pandey along with the police force chased the miscreants. On reaching Sarupahan area, the motorcycle of the miscreants went out of control and they fell.The police surrounded them and warned them to surrender, but they opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing by the police one of the miscreants was shot in his right leg, while the second tried to take advantage of the opportunity and escape. But he was also caught by the police after a chase.During interrogation, the miscreants were identified as Chahat Kumar (22), and Munna Shah (45), both residents of Katihar district of Bihar. The injured miscreant was admitted to hospital. During interrogation, they admitted that they, along with their other associates, had lured women on the pretext of cleaning jewellery. They said that they were involved in such loot in various districts and states.The police said that a detailed investigation of the network of the inter-state criminals is being conducted and efforts to arrest the other associates are on.
