Varanasi: Katra kotwali police in Mirzapur district arrested two chain snatchers after an encounter near Natwa area early morning on Thursday. One of the accused suffered bullet injury in the leg during exchange of fire and was admitted to hospotal.The police also seized a stolen chain, two country-made pistols and cartridges from them.Providing detail of the action, Mirzapur’s ASP Nitesh Singh said that on a tip-off about movement of criminals involved in a recent chain snatching incident, Katra Kotwali police started checking vehicles at Janhvi Tri junction early morning, when two youths on a motorcycle were signalled to stop. The riders, however, sped towards Natwa via Dudhnath Tiraha. After being surrounded by police, they opened fire to evade arrest.Singh said that during retaliatory firing by cops, one of them identified as Saddam alias Lakhendra (34) of Karma area in Sonbhadra district, suffered bullet injury in his leg, while his accomplice Firoz Alam (30) of Bhadohi district, was caught while attempting to flee.After recovering a pistol, cartridges, motorcycle and a looted gold chain, police rushed Saddam to hospital. The arrested duo confessed to snatching a chain from an elderly woman near Natwa Tri junction on Sept 1.
