Chennai: TVK govt is set to table a resolution in the state assembly on Monday to make Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu as the first item in all govt functions and events in educational institutions.According to the agenda of the assembly proceedings for Monday, the resolution to be tabled by chief minister C Joseph Vijay said Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu should be sung before the commencement of all functions organised by “educational institutions, universities, govt offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions in the state.”The resolution recalls that Tamil Thai Vaazhthu, taken from the prologue of `Manonmaniam,’ written by Manonmaniam Sundaranar in 1891, has been sung at govt functions since November 23, 1970, following a govt order. It was also accorded official status as the state song on December 12, 2021 and an order was issued to sing it ahead of all events in educational institutions, universities, govt offices and PSUs.The resolution noted that it was in this backdrop that the Union home ministry had issued an order on July 9 with regard to singing of the state song. The resolution, however, did not elaborate the contents of the home ministry’s order, which said Vande Mataram should be sung first, followed by National Anthem, pushing the state song to the third slot.This order was implemented at the convocation function in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, which was incidentally named after the author of Tamil Thai Vazhthu. The incident was widely criticised by political parties in the state, when TVK assured that such an incident will not happen again.
