Gurgaon: A truck allegedly being driven on the wrong side of
Dwarka Expressway killed a 32-year-old motorcyclist and left his friend critically injured early on Sunday.
The crash has renewed concerns over unchecked wrong-side driving and the absence of effective monitoring on a speed corridor that has witnessed a string of serious accidents in recent weeks.
The victim, Prem Goyal (32), a resident of Dwarka in Delhi, died after the truck allegedly rammed the motorcycle he was riding near Sector 111. His friend,
Shankar, who was from Rajasthan’s Beawar district, suffered critical injuries and was referred to PGIMS Rohtak.
According to a complaint lodged by Prem’s brother, Amit Goyal, the two had left Dwarka around 10pm on Saturday on a TVS Sport motorcycle and were heading to Gurgaon in search of work. When Prem could not be contacted the following morning and his phone remained switched off, Amit began looking for him. His search ended on Dwarka Expressway, where he learnt that the motorcycle had been hit by an Eicher truck.
In his complaint, Amit alleged that the truck (DL1MA4900) was being driven on the wrong carriageway at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner when it crashed into the motorcycle.
“After receiving information, a team from Bajghera police station reached the spot and shifted both injured men to the civil hospital in Sector 10 in a private ambulance. Prem was declared dead on arrival, while Shankar was referred to PGIMS Rohtak as his condition was critical,” a police officer said.
Police seized the truck, but are yet to trace the driver
Police seized both the truck and the damaged motorcycle. “We also recovered two mobile phones from the victims, which helped us establish their identities and contact their family members,” the officer added.An FIR was registered under sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (causing death by negligence) and 125A (act endangering life) of BNS, along with Section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said efforts were underway to identify and arrest the truck driver.The accident is the latest in a series of fatal crashes on Dwarka Expressway that have highlighted glaring gaps in traffic enforcement. Last month, an e-rickshaw carrying protruding TMT bars entered the expressway, and a cab crashed into it from behind. The iron bars pierced the windscreen, killing the driver and injuring a woman passenger.Days later, two young men were killed and a woman injured after their car collided with a truck that allegedly changed lanes abruptly and braked suddenly.
