From tricolour-clad residents and patriotic playlists to children dressed as freedom fighters and veterans recounting tales of war, apartment communities across the city found their own ways to celebrate Independence Day. Cultural performances, quizzes, walkathons and flea markets added to the festive mood, but at the heart of it all was a simple idea—coming together as a community to celebrate the country.At Prestige Westwoods, a 600-unit complex behind Lulu Mall, the morning began with the flag hoisting at 9 am, setting the tone for a day of camaraderie and national pride. Elders also shared memories of Independence Day celebrations from their younger days. “These celebrations give children a glimpse of India’s rich cultural heritage and, at the same time, help build a stronger community,” said Jagadeesh Krishnan, president of the complex.At Mantri Serenity, Doddakalsandra, the celebrations took a more stirring turn when Vice Marshal (retd) Belligund Krishnamurthy Murali shared stories from his career, including his experiences during the 1999 Kargil War. His account of the courage and dedication of the armed forces gave the celebrations a deeper resonance, turning a festive morning into a tribute to those who have served the nation.In some communities, including Chandra Layout, the celebrations were deliberately simple — a reminder that sometimes the greatest joy lies simply in coming together.A Tribute To Freedom FightersAt Sumadhura Nandanam, a 1,000-resident community in Hoodie Circle, children stepped into the shoes of the country’s iconic freedom fighters for a lively fancy-dress contest. Dressed as Subhas Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and other historical figures, they brought history to life for their neighbours.“The contest was a way of celebrating the values of independence while reminding children of the sacrifices made by our national heroes,” said Shivam Jain, cultural secretary.Beyond Customary EventsAt Park West, home to around 6,000 residents, Independence Day was an invitation to explore India’s diversity. Children showcased different states through paintings and dance performances, while a national quiz tested their knowledge of the country’s geography, history and culture.For president Ajay Kumar, this year’s celebrations carried a more personal meaning after a recent motorcycle journey through Kashmir and Kargil. “Riding through Dras, Kargil and the challenging Himalayan terrain, and seeing the conditions in which our soldiers continue to guard the nation, was a humbling experience,” he said.“We celebrate Independence with flags, smiles, cultural programmes and festivities. But behind all this lie countless stories of courage, sacrifice and lives laid down for the country. This Independence Day, I hope we remember not just the freedom we earned, but also the soldiers who continue to protect it every day. Their names, struggles and sacrifices must never be forgotten.”Unsung Everyday HeroesAt Shriram Spurthi Association, comprising around 300 apartment units, the spotlight fell on the people who keep the community functioning day after day. Following the flag hoisting, housekeeping, security and maintenance staff were felicitated for their year-round service. Gifts were presented as a token of appreciation for their hard work and commitment.Reflections On FreedomFor some residents, Independence Day also prompted a more personal reflection on the meaning of freedom.For Santhosh Venkatrajan of Mantri Serenity, it represents self-governance and free speech.
